Saws

The right saw for the right job will make your work easier and the results professional. The teeth on a saw are bent slightly to the left and to the right This “set” cuts a wide enough channel through wood to keep the blade from binding. Remember when measuring do not forget to allow for its thickness. The saw itself is an example of excellent craftsmanship shaped and designed for a certain job.

Crosscut
The crosscut saw is used to cut across the grain of the wood. It should be 24- 26” long. It has equal sided teeth, every other is angled with the alternate ones from the opposite side. Crosscut saws commonly have 7-12 teeth/ inch the higher the number of teeth/ inch the smoother the cut.

Rip Saw
Cuts with forward motion only. It has 5 teeth/ inch used for ripping the wood with the grain. Because of the design of the triangular teeth with unequal sides, the saw cuts only on the forward motion.

Universal Saw
The all purpose saw will cut across or against the grain. If you want just one saw the universal saw is the one.

Special Tasks Saws

Bow Saw
Good for firewood, trimming limbs. Replacement blades are of fine, normal, or rough type. The saw should have a knuckle guard.

Backsaw
Used for cutting plastics, laminates, aluminum and wood. The saw is especially good for joint cutting often used with a miter box.

Keyhole Saw
This saw was used to cut key holes in wood doors. Used when space is limited when cutting small openings for pipes, outlets and for cutting curved lines. The saw is used after cutting a hole in the material.

Coping Saw
This saw is used for precise cuts like baseboards, crown molding and trim work that involves curved cuts. The blade can be set at different angles and tightened by turning the handle.

Hacksaw
The most versatile non- wood cutting saw. Depending on the material, the saw can be fitted with fine and coarse blades for thick and soft materials.
